The department consists of three groups: cabbage & broccoli breeding group, Chinese cabbage breeding group and spinach breeding group. It focuses on germplasm innovation and new variety development in cabbage, Chinese cabbage, broccoli and spinach, etc.; High-efficiency breeding techniques, such as male sterility, microspore culture; genetics and mechanism of male sterility, disease resistance and stress tolerance; mapping and marker of main agronomic characters; gene cloning and functional analysis.

The department has bred more than 80 varieties, including 20 main varieties, and achieved four National awards.
